  • Your shelter location may be different this year than in years past. However, know that the Department of Public Health and Emergency Management personnel are working to make it as safe as possible.
  • This year, all shelter residents over the age of two will be required to wear a surgical mask whenever possible. Masks will not be required during meal time or when showering. When masks cannot be worn, do your best to maintain physical distance from those outside of your family or traveling party.
  • Cots will be separated differently this year. Normally, cots are placed 40 square feet away from one another. To assist with physical distancing, cots will be distanced 110 square feet from one another. However, families can move their cots closer together if they wish.
  • Bring items to help you stay protected such as soap, hand sanitizer and cloth face coverings.
  • Practice physical distancing in the shelter and help children do the same. Do your best to stay 6 feet away from those outside of your family or traveling party.
  • Each shelter will have an isolation area for those that begin to feel sick while sheltering. If you, or someone in your family, feel ill, tell shelter staff immediately!
  • Bring items to keep children occupied and happy. Family board games and other non-electronic activities will be helpful to keep children engaged. Physical distancing may prevent the opening of in-shelter play centers this year and could, therefore, leave a void for child entertainment.
