Stay Cool, Chatham: Four Habits to Beat the Heat
Chatham Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to plan ahead as temperatures climb this summer. If you have to be outside during the hottest part of the day, CEMA recommends building these four habits into your routine.
1. Drink Before You Are Thirsty
Thirst is a late warning sign that your body is already behind on fluids. Drink water every 15 to 20 minutes when you're working or playing outside, rather than waiting until you feel parched.
2. Seek Shade on a Schedule
Don't wait for the heat to force a break. Plan shade breaks ahead of time and stick to them, even if you feel fine in the moment.
3. Check on Each Other
Heat illness can creep up quickly, especially during physical activity. Keep an eye on the people around you. If someone stops sweating, that's a signal to stop working and cool down immediately.
4. Know the Warning Signs
Recognizing heat illness early can prevent a medical emergency. Watch for headache, cramping, dizziness, and confusion, and take them seriously the moment they appear.
