SITUATION REPORT #3
Alberto

6/13/2006    8:00 AM
At 5:00 AM EDT, Chatham County remains in a Tropical Storm Warning and a Flood Watch. A Tropical Storm warning means winds of at least 39 mph are expected in the area. A Flood Watch means that conditions could produce localized flooding. Flooding potential becomes greater near high tide.

The center of Tropical Storm Alberto was located near 29.2 North and 84.2 West or about 270 miles southwest of Savannah. Alberto is moving toward the northeast near 9 mph. Maximum sustained are near 65 mph with higher gusts. Alberto will likely make landfall as a strong tropical storm.

Based on the latest forecast track, Chatham may begin to experience tropical storm force wind gusts as early as this afternoon. Sustained winds will reach as high as 35-45 mph along the immediate coast. These winds have the potential to result in tides 1-2 feet above normal. Storm total rainfall amounts of 3-5 inches are expected for our area.

There is a risk of isolated tornadoes today through Wednesday. A tornado watch is likely to be issued for Chatham later today. Tornadoes associated with Tropical Storms can form with little to no advance notice. Residents should remain alert and be prepared to protect life and property should a watch or warning be issued.

Forecast amounts could vary depending on the track of the storm. Any east or west deviation from the current forecast track could alter the wind and rain predications for this area.

Operating Condition 4 remains in effect. OPCON 4 is the first stage of advanced alert readiness. All interested parties should maintain vigilance in monitoring this storm. A thorough check of emergency supplies for in-place sheltering should commence. Emergency response agencies should review their hurricane plans and determine the availability of their assets, resources and personnel. Those agencies that have responsibility to share this release should begin doing so at this time.

The next Situation Report will be issued as conditions warrant.
