At 5 PM EDT, Chatham County has been placed into a Tropical Storm Warning. A Tropical Storm warning means that tropical storm force winds (39 mph) are expected in the area within 24 hours.
The center of Tropical Storm Alberto was located near 27.9 North and 85.1 West or about 460 miles Southwest of Savannah. Alberto is moving toward the North-Northeast near 10 mph. Maximum sustained are near 70 mph with higher gusts. Alberto has the potential to become a Hurricane within the next 24 hours. Based on the current forecast, the earliest impact to our area from Tropical Storm Alberto would begin Tuesday morning and continue into Wednesday morning. Sustained winds of 30-40 mph along the immediate coast and rainfall amounts of 3-5 inches could affect our area during that time period. Forecast amounts could vary depending on the track of the storm. Any east or west deviation from the current forecast track could alter the wind and rain predicated for this area. All interested parties should continue to monitor this storm through local media outlets. Operating Condition 4 is now in effect. OPCON 4 is the first stage of advanced alert readiness. This notification is being given as a precautionary measure. All interested parties should maintain vigilance in monitoring this storm. A thorough check of emergency supplies for in- place sheltering should commence. Emergency response agencies should review their hurricane plans and determine the availability of their assets, resources and personnel. Those agencies that have responsibility to share this release should begin doing so at this time. The next Situation Report will be issued as conditions warrant. |
