Information Release #1
Tropical Storm Franklin

7/22/2005    8:00 AM
As of the 05:00 am advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Franklin was located at 26.7N and 77.3W or about 433 miles SE of Chatham County. TS Franklin is moving NW near 12 mph with a gradual turn to the N and a decrease in forward speed expected during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts. Franklin’s forecast indicates the storm will remain off shore and continue it’s gradual turn to more NE over the next several days.

CEMA remains cautiously optimistic that TS Franklin will have minimal impact to Coastal Georgia. We will continue to monitor the storm throughout the weekend and alert you to any significant changes.

CEMA remains in OPCON 5, the most relaxed stage during Hurricane Season. During this stage, residents and businesses are encouraged to review and update individual emergency plans. Prudent emergency preparedness recommendations throughout the year include:

* Review and update insurance coverage
* Locate important documents and make them readily available
* Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes outside of Chatham County
* Identify primary relocation destination and a backup locations
* Make contact and prepare to assist elderly family members, friends and neighbors
